Current projects

The following projects are being undertaken by government and national road safety stakeholders to implement and further develop elements of the National Road Safety Strategy and supporting action plans. They are listed according to themes of Safe roads, Safe road use and Safe vehicles.

Safe roads

Measuring non-fatal crash outcomes – Stage 2

The Austroads Safety Task Force is developing an extension of work undertaken in project SS2034. The project, SAG6132 ‘A national approach to measuring non-fatal crash outcomes – stage 2’ seeks to implement a data-linking method to improve measurement of non-fatal hospitalised road injuries in Australia. National Prediction Model

The Austroads Road Safety Task Force is developing a national prediction model. The first stage of this project will provide an estimate of the baseline trauma trends, both fatalities and serious injuries, over an agreed time period (likely to be either five or ten years) for consideration in planning for the next national road safety strategy.

If feasible, the second stage of modelling will provide estimates of the types of countermeasures and the scale of implementation of these countermeasures for consideration as part of the next national road safety strategy. Learn more about the national prediction model.

Motorcycle rider perceptive countermeasures

Austroads is conducting a pilot of innovative treatments with the aim of reducing number of motorcycle casualties on high risk sections of road through mountainous terrain. Learn more about the project Motorcycle rider perceptive countermeasures.

Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP)

This Austroads program uses two complementary methods to assess the safety of roads: risk mapping and star ratings. Learn more about AusRAP

Safe vehicles

Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP)

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) runs a crash test program and publishes safety ratings for consumers, focused on the level of occupant and pedestrian protection and collision avoidance capabilities provided by different vehicle models.

ANCAP is supported by member organisations which include all state and territory automobile associations, the Australian Government and road authorities in all states and territories and New Zealand. Learn more about ANCAP.

Used Car Safety Ratings (UCSR)

The Used Car Safety Ratings (UCSR) is an ongoing research project funded by the Australian, state, territory and New Zealand governments and automobile associations. UCSR is a publically available tool to help people buy safer second hand vehicles. Ratings are updated annually based on data from the Monash University Accident Research Centre. Monitoring progress in reducing road trauma

The Office of Road Safety’s National Road Safety Data Hub monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of infrastructure investments and other countermeasures in reducing deaths and serious injuries on Australia's roads. National Road Safety Partnership Program
