Motorcyclists face disproportionate risk on the roads, and helmets and other protective clothing have an important role in reducing some of this risk. There is evidence suggesting that over 25% of the protective clothing worn by motorcyclists in Australia is of inferior quality and may fail under crash conditions.
Governments will progress the development of a consumer rating program for motorcycle protective clothing. Clothing will be rated based on the level of protection provided as well as comfort under a range of conditions. The intention is to promote awareness of safer motorcycle clothing among motorcyclists in order to increase usage rates and reduce injuries, and to encourage manufacturers to provide a wider range of more effective protective clothing suitable for Australian conditions.
