Why
Speeding increases both crash risk and severity. Point-to-point (average speed) cameras influence speed choices over long lengths of road. With speeding detected over a greater distance, they demonstrate intentional behaviour rather than a possible short lapse of concentration. Mobile speed cameras can allow for more unpredictable enforcement, contributing to greater overall compliance over the network.
Outcomes by 2020
Multiple point-to-point camera systems in all jurisdictions, and increased use of mobile speed cameras, resulting in greater compliance with speed limits.
Implementation
- Implement point-to-point (average speed) safety cameras across high risk, high traffic volume parts of the national highway system including heavy vehicle routes.
- Increase targeted deployment of mobile speed cameras across the network to improve compliance with speed limits and reduce crash risk.
